Chapel Celesia
Ray Set and Tower are new works, each assembled from different ceramic modules. The units of Ray Set are covered with glazes that are unique but only slightly different to their neighbours. Varying colour and tone across space creates an interplay between represented and actual light, mimicking atmospheric effects. In contrast, the dusty glow of Tower relies on the raw texture of fired pink clay. Born out of a fascination with how small changes in physical context can cause dramatic shifts in perception, the works investigate interactions between places, circumstances and experience. Despite their physical weight and echoes of monumentality, they give light centre stage and let it play, seeking moments of dissolution and transcendence.
Anton Burdakov is an internationally renowned visual artist based in Berlin. Born in Kiev, Burdakov grew up in the Ukraine and the UK. He studied neuroscience at the University of Cambridge and sculpture at the Royal College of Art in London. Focusing on the relationship between people and built environments, he works across sculpture, installations and projects in public space. Beyond practical functions, he sees built environments as a way to access and re-order unconscious processes and fictions. Borrowing approaches from architecture, Burdakov seeks to connect his works to wider themes of memory, alternative timelines and the possibility of change.
